and you picked me back {twelve}

He knows me better than I know myself, calls me once a day from work and says he "just wanted to hear my voice and get his Emily fix," he sweeps floors, does dishes and laundry, gets up with kids in the night, changes diapers, makes our family laugh with his Volkswagen German accent voice, never has to worry about what he says or does bc he always acts with integrity (like it's freakishly perfect), loves weeding and organizing the garage, and still takes my breath away with his dark brown eyes and perfect pouty lips. I love you Sean Sean. Thank the lord I picked you and you picked me back.

ELEVEN.

we are one in a million.
i love you.
it was a sunny day.
stacie had to put sunscreen on me when we were taking pictures.
you know how i sunburn so easily.
there were only a few clouds in the sky.
the tulips were everywhere on temple square.
the japanese tour bus stopped and took pictures of us.
it was pretty awkward.
i waved at them.
you threw me up on your shoulder.
they took more pictures.
i was so embarrassed.
but i also felt like a movie star too.
i stopped putting on lipstick because we kept kissing it off.
so in most of our pictures i don't have any on.
i love knowing why.
there was a little breeze.
it kept blowing my veil.
after three hours of taking pictures in the beautiful perfect spring utah sun we walked to carl's junior in our wedding attire down state street.
you bought me an icy cold diet coke.
our friends were driving in their car and hung out the window
waving and yelling and smiling at us.
i was bursting i was so happy.
we had just finished finals at byu-idaho.
i had taken 21 credits that semester, worked 17 hours a week, and still got straight A's.
you worked full time because it was your off track.
it felt so amazing to just be there together with no responsibilities but each other.
i don't remember a single thing going wrong the entire day.
i'm sure things did, but i was oblivious.
just being with you, taking in the entire day, celebrating us.
i couldn't have asked for anything more.
when the kids all wake up all night long,
and we're BONE tired at the end of the day,
and there's poop everywhere,
laundry that's not done,
and it seems like the toys have taken over,
sometimes i'll think back to that day and the week of our honeymoon right after,
and i'll just go to that place,
and it makes me so happy to just be married to you,
being with you through all of it.
and remembering every detail of that day when it all started eleven years ago today.

BE KIND, REWIND {#decade}

dear sean,
last weekend in arizona when you had the guitar duo come over and sing me a special love song,
i really really love that.
it made my heart flutter!
especially when you whispered the English words into my ears,
as they sang in spanish.
it reminded me of our honeymoon.
the most beautiful beautiful spanish.
and they were singing about i am nothing without you.
you make me whole.
really heart stopping, i'll love you forever, you make all my dreams come true stuff like that.
i can still hear those guitar strings strumming,
and feel your arm wrapped around mine.
how warm you are.
how warm you always are.
10 years ago feels like yesterday.
like no time has passed at all.
but like we've come so far together.
#DECADE.
can you believe it??!!
love,
babe
it was 70 and sunny.
i remember watching stacie sitting in the grass and putting sunscreen on.
and then putting some on my arms and neck too.
i remember the japanese tour bus unloading and taking pictures of us
while we were taking the picture below.
on our wedding video is shows me waving at them, lifted up on your shoulder.
i wonder what they did with those pictures?
i remember the tulips were blossoming all over temple square.
the most perfectly bright and beautiful tulip blossoms.
i remember thinking there was no one around but just us.
even though i know there were TONS of people everywhere.
i remember not really knowing what to do with my bouquet in some of the pictures.
this was before the invention of pinterest and tutorials about how to pose for your wedding pictures.
i remember the wind was blowing,
and it made my veil blow up above me,
and it made for some really cute pics.
i remember being sealed to you in the temple,
watching your eyes tear up across the altar from me and we both said yes,
knowing that i was going to spend forever
with no one but you.
and i remember thinking that forever just might not even be long enough to satisfy me.
i love with you.
...
there was no such thing as "social media," not even MySpace was out yet, let alone Facebook or Instagram.
there was only one laundry detergent that came for "he" washers
because front loaders were JUST hitting the stores and they were the "new retro."
nobody had wireless internet because ethernet was a luxury, but most people still used dial-up
{like us because we could use mom's password to sign onto her AOL account for free}.
It took about 5 minutes to log on to check your email, which you only did every couple of days anyway. sometimes i would take a shower while it was logging on
because i knew that by the time i was out it MIGHT be connected.
there were no smart phones, and nobody texted because it was just too expensive. the hot new cell phone was a tiny motorolla with a green light screen that came with one of the first interchangeable covers offered. i remember i found a cute pink hibiscus flower one at the mall and everyone wanted to know where i got one that wasn't just a plain color. right after that the NOKIA phone came out that lit up WHITE, and it had lots of different cases you could switch out for. you could also personalize a message to pop up to yourself when you turned it on.
we checked when our favorite tv shows were on by the TV Guide channel,
and it was always a bonus when you caught it rolling in on channel 2. winning!!!
there was so such thing as a DVR, and if you wanted something recorded you had to tape it on your VHS recorder, which i did until maxine was born because i just didn't see why on earth someone would need a TeVo or a DVR anyway {wow. WOW.} the worst was when you set your show to record on the wrong speed and it ran through an entire tape in 30 minutes, cutting it off halfway through oprah, OR when the programming changed due to some fluke of scheduling and there was no such thing as just
watching it online later, or better yet catching it on demand.
there was no netflix. we rented our VHS tapes from horkley's {gas station in rexburg} for .50 cents
{BE KIND REWIND}, and if we wanted to splurge on a DVD it was $1.50. we always bought sodas for .60 cents and 100 swedish fish out of the penny candy tub,
with a bag of popcorn to share. those were the best date nights.
plasma tv's were the new rage.
iMac's in different colors were the computer/laptop everyone wanted, but everyone still had PC's.
gas was less than $2 a gallon. WAY LESS. like it was $1.05 or something like that.
"distressed" jeans were brand new, with bleached crease lines and holes. OH HOLES!!! holes were BIG BIG BIG business in fashion.
the atkin's diet was the diet everyone had just done or was about to do again.
thin thin thin sunglasses were in style. the thinner, the better.
and platform flip flops by Rocket Dogs. WOAH BABY. they were my FAVORITE:)
everyone carried around Kodak disposable cameras to take pictures.
digital cameras were just coming out, but no one had them.
we went to the drug store to develop our film.
i loved printing them with the white border around the outside.
you could do black and white film if you had a high tech "professional" camera to load it into, but you had to wait until your film was DEVELOPED to see how they turned out, and it always took about a week unless you paid mucho bucko's for 24 hour developing.
you would order "doubles" so you could share your pictures with your friends or give one to your mom.
and the best part of picking up a roll of film from the photo place was standing there looking through each picture and laughing about them with your friends about how claaaaasic each shot was.
we have about 8 pictures from our entire honeymoon because we just didn't take that many pictures.
there was no such thing as a "selfie," but of course we took them, we just didn't call them that. what did we call them anyway?
we bought things in cash, but didn't balance our checkbook because online banking had JUST come out,
so we could check our balance every day on our home computer.
people left VOICE messages, and if it was a boy you were dating or wanted to be dating, my friends and i would analyze the message about 5 million times, before we CALLED him back, which of course we would rehearse our exact reply and sometimes write it down {wait what?} before we called him back,
just in case we also had to leave a message back.
it was NOT to call more than once. that was too desperate.
call waiting and caller ID was a luxury.
nobody had GPS--they used paper maps or SUCKY MAP QUEST directions that you printed out online before you left--the directions were always wrong.
i once got lost in san francisco on my 18th birthday for 3 hours. SCARRED for life.
there was no pinterest.
"googling it" was even new, but sometimes we still used "ask jeeves."
does that even still exist?
we bought CD's from tower records or whatever record store was in the mall.
if you didn't want to buy the entire album you'd buy just the single.
there was no such thing as "get it on iTunes."
the Napster scam was big news because it happened right when we were graduating from high school,
but you could still download music for free on some file sharing sites
like Audio Galaxy when we got married. i'm pretty sure i made our entire wedding CD gift from there.
We made our friends/boyfriends/girlfriends mix CD's. Labeled and decorated with sharpies.
the more intricate the design and colors the more they loved you.
and yet sometimes less was more too.
tapes were a thing of the past, but i still had a tape player in my Jeep, which i loved to play my paula abduel tape on with the volume turned up as loud as possible. also, i really loved your praise to man tape on sundays. where did that cassette go anyway?
nobody had heard of rascal flatts, but they were FAMOUS in idaho,
and their "Melt" album was our favorite.
wedding dresses were WHITE WHITE WHITE. the most beautiful crisp white,
and the bigger the poof at the bottom, the better!
in utah and idaho it was super trendy to color the bottom half of your hair dark deep red.
my dad was horrified.
you could buy a full-fare ticket on southwest one-way for $79 ANYWHERE, and sometimes you could even score a $59 or $69 ticket if you didn't mind 2 or 3 stops along the way.
white puka shell necklaces and white tennis shoes were so in style for boys, and sean was OVER THE TOP AMAZINGLY JAW DROPPING GORGEOUS in them.
spikey hair, especially when it was pushed up straight in the front.
WOWZA.
all of my friends and i had a least 2 pairs of lucky jeans and 3 pairs of steve madden shoes.
everybody went to tanning beds--is that really still something people do??? except for my roommate dolly who did the european spray tan before anyway had even heard of it. i love that smart girl!
i took my CD player {anti-skip} to the gym with my favorite running CD mix, which i labeled with a sharpie.
some people used MP3 players, and ipods were JUST coming out.
no one had ever seen WHITE headphones before.
and hashtags were just a symbol on the computer we used
when we didn't want to take the time to write out the word "number."
i can't believe how much the world has changed in the last 10 years.
i am so glad i've gotten to watch it all with you.
te amo, mi amore.
te amo.

letters to Beth {tinker bell's house, 100-30-17, and backyard shenanigans}

{sean proposed to me in this very spot, under the flag pole on temple square 9 & 1/2 years ago,
in front of about 300 people coming to see all of the christmas lights--it was dec. 5th.
i remember i was SO embarrassed! i love LOVE love the story of it all. sean is my favorite:)}
.....

dear beth,
we celebrated our anniversary all week this week, but especially this weekend, complete with rock climbing, shopping, dinner, and a movie on saturday night. today we decided to take the kids to temple square to show them where everything became official. you'll be happy to know that brenzie {my mom was trying to say "chase" today, and somehow that was what came out, we all laughed, and i declared it was SO them and pure genius on her part}---so brenzie did not pull any tulips out of the flower beds on temple square today, NOR did they steal any money from the fountains, despite the fears i expressed to you on skype chat earlier. we are so proud:) sean and some of his siblings were left unattended once when they were kids, and when bill and val came back, they found them stealing coins out of the fountain by the old meeting house. hoodlums i tell ya! HAHA! my children did however run around with no shoes on {b/c the raised grassy parts are just too enticing for bare feet}, and on our way out max sprinkled black sparkly cigarette butt sand all in her hair. who even knew they had ash trays on temple square. well, they do. obviously, so people will extinguish before they walk through. such a nice gesture which i so appreciate, it just not on my max radar. after a lot of brushing, picking it out like a mama monkey {minus the eating it part}, and a bath with two shampooings WITH brushing WHILE shampooing, there were still remnants of it when i combed through her wet hair before bed tonight. she also pooped in our grass today. yep you read that right. brennan came in declaring it, i of course was in denial about it, and max was proud of it. i can't decide if i'm more happy that she pooped in the grass and not IN the sandbox, or if i'm just mad that she pooped in the grass at all. my backyard neighbors were on their porch when it happened. they promised me they didn't see it, and couldn't stop laughing when they found out she did it {which is why we love and appreciate them so}. i made her do her own poop patrol with a plastic baggy inside out over her hand. i was mortified. we now have to sell the house and move. the shame is just too great. also, i think it's stupendously hilarious, so that's an element of emotion going on too. mostly, b/c as i was scolding her and putting a ziploc baggy inside out over her hand, i could only imagine teasing her about that very moment in front of every boy that walks through our front door. "hi, i'm emily, max pooped in the backyard once when she was 3. have a great night! and don't have sex or do drugs, thanks!" good grief, i'm just so relieved she did it in our yard and not over at someone else's house. COULD YOU IMAGINE!!?? i would just DIE. after she did her "patrol" we made her sit in time out and then had a LENGTHY talk about how boys can pee outside b/c they don't have to wipe, but NOBODY and i emphasized about a million times how NOBODY not even boys can poop outside. brennan was brought in for this part of the conversation too, just so we were ALL clear on the rules:) i didn't even go into the camping rules b/c i was afraid they would play "camping" and i'd find people burying their poop out back. we just left that one for ten years from now when somebody finally convinces me to camp again, and let's be honest, i'm not going camping if there's not running water and toilets at the campsite anyway. so then, just to make sure we were all clear, i had her tell me the rules: boys can pee outside if they're kids, but only b/c they don't have to wipe, girls have to come inside, even though it's not fair, b/c they have to wipe, and NOBODY {say it with me NOBODY} poops outside. let's hope that one is behind us. ok, i can't stop laughing. this is just 100-30-17 funny. that's how brennan explains anything that's "big" right now. he tells me "mom, i love you 100-30-17!", and "mom, you're 100-30-17 beautiful!" {that one is my favorite of the "100-30-17's"}, and then yesterday i put some mascara on for sean and my anniversary date night, and i got a "wow, mom, you're 100-30-17-18 beautiful!" BONUS:) i absolutely love it. anything that's good around here is titled "100-30-17." like dinner tonight was carne asada fajitas, and it was "100-30-17." that's how you know you've hit the jackpot. when they tell you it's "100-30-17." i just think it's about the cutest thing he's ever come up with! {can you end a sentence with "with"? i don't think you're supposed to...}

the blossoms on our trees out front our blooming this week. they glow pink against the blue spring skies. i can't get enough. they lift me up when i look at them. it's breathtaking.

i am just so in love with life.
especially all of the people in my life.
and PIP my dear, i really love food.
of course:)
and i wish you were here eating food with me right at this very minute,
but it's 6:02am in Heidelberg, so i'm hoping that your boys are letting you sleep.
tell me about bryce's trip to ireland.
why is he there?
when does he get home?
how are you holding up?
i've always wanted to go.
i have a mommy and baby matching hat and scarf set from there that my parents brought back for me when they visited a few years ago.
a cream knitted scarf and hat for me,
and cream knitted baby hat and gloves for the kiddos.
so unbelievably darling.
plus, it reminds me of the shire, and i would just love to go there someday.

i hope your morning finds you well dear beth,
full of lovely breakfast and happy morning rituals.

love,
emiline

p.s.
when we got to the temple today, max pointed at it and said "that's where tinker bell lives!" yep, pretty sure she thinks that's Disneyland right there. alicia put it best when she said "the original happiest place on earth." and that's what i want my kids to know, that the temple really is the original happiest place on earth. i am so happy whenever i am there:) can you believe all of the beautiful colors right now? tulips will always remind me of our wedding day.

 {the blossoms popping on our trees out front. JOY!}
{max, just BEFORE "patrol"--happy monday, as it already is where you are.}

i've got you babe {climb on}

today!
oh today!
it was just the most wonderful day.
the kids woke up and fought all through breakfast,
except chase,
he just ate his banana and drank his milk,
and then yelled at me until i brought him his scrambled eggs,
then he ate those too,
and then he was happy.
i did my hair and makeup and gathered all of my plans for tonight on a blank piece of white printer paper.
along with every gift card i've been hoarding since before christmas.
b/c when you're anniversary falls on a wednesday,
you celebrate on saturday:)
and oh i planned a day!
starting at 2pm.
we started off with rock climbing.
i thought i was going to just walk right in and repel myself around.
who knew it was actual exercise to climb???
aMAZing exercise.
b/c you don't even feel like you're exercising.
at least not until you can't lift your arms or hold yourself in standing position.
then you think, "oh hey, i think i'm exercising."
after an hour of climbing up and down and around,
our arms were complete jello.
i told sean i didn't think i would even be able to lift my fork up to my mouth during dinner.
not to worry, i could.
phew.
the first time i climbed up on the wall i had a hard time letting go.
my inner control freak was waving its panic flag.
i just kept looking down and thinking that someone should really be watching us to make sure we were doing it right,
and what about those ropes,
accidents happen!
and that's when it hit me,
i just needed to trust that sean had my back.
and to just get over my worries b/c he had everything under control.
and i thought about how i didn't even plan for rock climbing to be about strengthening our actual relationship.
i just thought it would be something a really cool wife would do.
you know,
take her husband rock climbing.
and it was.
SOOOOO super "100-30-17" cool.
as brennan would say.
except for the harness all up and around your butt and stuff.
i'm pretty sure i looked liked tom cruise in mission impossible 2 climbing those walls,
except i'm sure i didn't actually look like that in real life,
but my brain thought i did,
so i did.
yessssssssssssss:)
the first time i climbed up i turned around about a third of the way up,
and realized that maybe i was scared of heights.
b/c man my stomach was telling me i was.
and so i just sailed my way back down to the ground.
man, i love the coming back down.
so free.
so absolutely care free.
like an up and down swing.
but up on that wall, where you're hanging on,
and you think your arms are the only things holding you up,
and then you remember that even though your instincts are telling you that you're going to fall and hit the ground,
your brain knows you're not.
b/c you've got this awesome rope,
and awesome guy named sean keeping you safe.
the second time i made it halfway up,
but was still just too scared to go all the way up.
i mean, one little rope and one little caribeaner and a rope that could just slip right out!
after two attempts i finally decided i was going to go to the very top.
and i wasn't going to look back.
and when i finally got to the top,
i looked out of the roof window and saw the jordan river temple.
and it was gorgeous.
and then i looked down and saw sean looking back up at me.
and i knew that i could just let go and i wouldn't fall.
my arms felt like they were going to melt off of me they were so tired.
you're supposed to say take, but i just yelled that i was "coming down now."
and then i heard sean yell up "i've gotcha ya."
and i let go and i just hung up there in the air, twirling around on my rope,
free as i could possibly be.
and i felt like i was a kid.
not a care in the world,
and i knew that sean had me.
and i was all, "everybody should do this with their spouse!"
and then i thought about how i am so cheesy and melodramatic sometimes.
and then it was sean's turn,
and when he was coming down my hair got caught in the belay thing like a piece of fabric going up the wrong way in a sewing machine.
i was almost in a pickle with it too,
but the instructor walked by just as it was getting sucked through
and grabbed onto the rope to give it slack until my hair was threaded out.
with sean hanging up at the very top of the rock in the air,
and he was all, "i was just coming over to tell you to watch out for your hair getting stuck."
and i was all, "yeah, thanks for coming by!"
really dodged the bullet on that one folks.
that's for sure.
so finally after an hour, our arms stopped working,
and that's when we realized that our legs had pretty much stopped working too,
so we decided to call climbing quits,
SHOPPING was next:)
and OH let me tell you,
it was the kind of shopping day you LIVE for.
where everything you loved fit,
like AMAZING fit.
and you found everything you loved the minute you walked into the store.
do you know those days?
i found polka dot pants and mint green pants, and maxi skirts galore.
and i told sean how i totally remembered how much i used to LOVE shopping,
for days just like these.
and then i changed into my new skirt and shirt in the parking lot of bucca's,
in between two different couples walking by.
almost giving the second lady quite the show.
then we stuffed ourselves with pasta, raspberry cream sodas, calamari, and eggplant parmigiana.
and completed our night with a movie on the silver screen.
the jackie robinson one.
and the entire way home we talked about it.
what we thought,
how it made us think about the past, the present, and the future,
and it just reminded me about how when you're doing great things,
sometimes it doesn't feel like anyone else thinks you're doing great things,
but you're STILL doing great things.
and i just couldn't stop telling sean how i just love that we are doing great things.
together:)
{and about how i couldn't believe how sore i was from climbing.
but not in a complaining way,
just in a who knew we were going to exercise today kind of way.}
{sean is the cutest.}

BIG thanks to:
linsey YA-YA tanner,
mom,
andrea,
and mary
for taking care of our little kiddos all day.
you were the filling in our pie.
the baseball in our pitch.
the....right, just stop...;)
thanks!
{while we were gone. how cute are all of those cousins of ours?}
{mary holding chase, max in outfit number 2-still haven't heard about that yet-
and 2 ruff's with brennan on the swings. man, i love them.}
THE END.
{i think i might sleep in my new skirt. no really.}

nine {heartbeats fast}

"
The day we met,

frozen I held my breath.
Right from the start
I knew that I'd found the home for my
Heartbeats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow

One step closer...

I have died everyday waiting for you

Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this
One step closer..."

"...I have died everyday waiting for you

Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you

Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more

One step closer
I love your for a thousand more
One step closer..."

"...I have died everyday waiting for you

Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I love you for a thousand more."

double

the one time in your life when you can have a double chin
and everyone adores you for it.
how did we ever survive without him???
..................
going on a date between nursings,
no makeup,
and sleepy-eyed.
we must have a newborn:)

eight is great!

3 handsome men delivered breakfast in bed to me this morning.
i'll happily awake from a deep sleep to that any day of the week:)
8 years went by in a snap!
HAPPY HAPPY
to my sean sean.
...........................................................
the rest of the morning went like this:
1. sean leaves for work
2. max dumps OHs cereal all over floor
{easy to vaccum, crisis averted, slightly annoyed it was the expensive cereal, could be worse...}
3. nurse chase
4. max wants phone
5. max needs help with phone
6. try to help max with phone
7. max hits chase while nursing
8. chase cries
9. scold max, time out after chase is done
10. max hides in curtain
11. max comes back, hits chase again {now i'm really annoyed}
12. point finger and tell her to "go to timeout" in a mean mommy voice
13. max says "NO!" and marches away
14. max brings me her ruby red shoes, wants them on
15. i tell her "i will help you put them on when chase is done eating."
16. max hits chase over the head with her shoes
17. chase screams, face bright red
18. i am now furious and tell her i'm going to throw her shoes in the trash {not my finest hour}
19. put chase down, eating has to wait, pick up max, consider locking her in the basement {this is the crazy mom that lives inside of me}, decide to grab the booster seat in the the basement instead
20. strap max to the booster seat--mommy 1 point, max 40,000 points {go me}
21. leave max there for 20 min while i finish feeding chase
22. send max to friend's house and brennan on a field trip with grandma
23. angels sing--is it time for my date tonight yet???
8 years ago today i was taking pictures in the tulips of temple square.
it was 70 and sunny.
the most perfect day i could have dreamed up.
another gorgeous sunny day today,
with gorgeous babies.
healthy and happy.
the happiest life i could ever have dreamed up.
even with a 2 year old that is really naughty when i nurse.
it's a good thing they are all so cute.
and that i can laugh at it when it's all over.
have mercy.

i melt.

i have been told
that if you can make it 7 years,
you can make it 70.
PHEW!
i guess this means we've made it.
;)
...
sometimes when the lights are out,
i will lay in bed.
wide awake.
just excited to have him.
he is my perfect match.
he brings out my very best.
and makes me want to be better.
the longer we are married,
the more i realize that getting married is a roll of the dice.
and the dice were on.
7 down,
here's to 70 more!

click here and here for 5 and 6.
...
"When you light those candles
Up there on that mantle, setting the mood
Well, I just lie there staring
Silently preparing to love on you
Well, I can feel the heat from across the room
Ain't it wild what a little flame can make you wanna do..."

"I melt every time you look at me that way
It never fails, anytime, any place
This burn in me is the coolest thing I've ever felt
I melt..."
"Don't know how you do it
I love the way I lose it, every time
What's even better
Is knowing that forever you're all mine
The closer you get, the more my body aches
One little stare from you is all it takes...."
"I melt every time you look at me that way
It never fails, anytime, any place
This burn in me is the coolest thing I've ever felt
I melt..."
"I melt every time you look at me that way
It never fails, anytime, any place
This burn in me is the coolest thing I've ever felt
I melt...

Every time you look at me that way
I melt, I melt."
-"I Melt" by Rascal Flatts
