CHELAN — A 62-year-old Utah man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition Tuesday after the crash of his ultralight airplane.

Chelan County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call shortly after 1 p.m. at the Chelan Municipal Airport.

Lawrence R. Simpson of Salt Lake City was flying the small aircraft when it took a nose dive and crashed into the northwest corner of the airport runway, according to witnesses. Fellow pilots at the scene said Simpson was an inexperienced pilot. Northwest Medstar responded to the emergency and airlifted Simpson to Seattle.

Deputies secured the accident scene until it can be investigated by inspectors for the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Lt. Jerry Moore of the Chelan County Sherif’s Office said Simpson was practicing “touch-and-go” landing maneuvers when the crash occurred.

“His wife was notified. She was in Salt Lake City,” said Moore.
