OH thank heaven! {the time i got locked in the 7-11 freezer & dusty baker}

my dad used to own one.
did you know?
san bruno, ca.
we always made mud pies in the dirt out front.
once a year every year we hit up the good ol' 7 to the 11.
man i miss those white complimentary paper cups behind the register.
unlimited slurpees for a hard day's work at the register,
and stocking processed fructose corn syrup items down each and every glorious aisle.
oh big chew purple bubble gum.
i still crave that sugar filled gum.
and it makes me feel like a reall ball player.
really, it does.
then there was bubble tape.
that was always a good time.
eat it all at once or cut it up with it's little opening and closing gum slicer through the next three days?
tough decisions folks.
TOUGH.
perfect potato chips.
reese's peeeeeeeanut butter cups!
and then sometimes if we were REALLY lucky Dusty Baker would come in
to buy a coffee or whatever it was that he bought.
i think he was the manager of the giants back then.
anyway, it was the COOLEST thing
b/c he was a famous GIANTS guy to our little kid selves.
magic.
and we would have him autograph his baseball card for us.
and then i would always brag about it to my friends in utah,
and i'm sure they all thought i was so dumb b/c who in the heck was dusty baker to them anyway???
he was super awesome to me.
#1 little giant's fan.
the lunch break was the best part of working at the store with my dad.
my brother and sister and i would set up shop in the back on plastic crates,
counting down the seconds for the ghetto old microwave to heat up our little individual pizza roll packs.
then we would count them all out, line them up, and see who's pack had the most.
my tongue always ALWAYS got burned b/c i was never patient enough to wait for them to cool down.
nothing's changed.
and then there was that one time when i got locked in the giant cooler in the back all by myself.
that dang heavy door always got stuck!
always!
and so i had to take one entire row of beverages out one by one,
and it took for what felt like forever,
until i could finally worm my way through the empty gatorade chilled section.
it was quite the tight fit,
let me tell you.
of course the manager found me just as my arms were escaping through the glass refrigerated door,
and half of my body was out, hands on the disgusting laminate floor, legs still completely stuck where the gatorade was supposed to be, with the door pushing against half of me,
like some form of downward 7-11 yoga dog.
or whatever.
now THAT'S what i call survival skills folks!!!
survival!
or something.
have mercy.
it was just so cold.
and i didn't even have the over sized cooler coat to put on in there.
and i thought i was just going to DIE and be frozen like an ice cube and lost forever!
hahahahahahahaha...
desperate times called for desperate measures.
i hope that i never have to crawl out through the freezer section of a convenience store ever again.
but i always think about that day every year
when i take my kids to get their free SEVEN-ELEVEN slurpees.
we sat up against the wall in the front of the store for everyone to finish
b/c there AIN'T NO WAY they were getting into my car with their red slurpees.
not happenin'!
i've turned into my parents.
no shame.
and it was pouring,
but it was warm,
and the rain just smelled so amazing.
chase drank almost all of mine.
brennan tried to drink all of max's after he drank all of his.
and then he tried to drink chase's.
chase might be the smallest gibson, but he's the fiercest.
don't mess with a man's slurpee.
ever.
then the rain REALLY started to come down.
we were soaked and drove home with the heater on in july.
it was awesome.
OH THANK HEAVEN FOR 7-11!

ode to the PAPA's

SEAN
i love how you come home from work and drop everything to play with the kids.
i love how you play ball battle in the big room so i can make dinner in the kitchen without any helpers.
i love how you take the kids on daddy day trips.
i love how you teach brennan to work hard.
i love how you treat max like a princess.
i love how you hold chase while you grill so he doesn't cry while we get dinner ready.
i love how you wake up with the kids every morning so i can sleep a little bit longer.
i love how you treat me like a queen.
you are my numero uno baby daddy.
i love your most adorable smile and contagious laugh.
but most of all, i love your sweet kisses and your deepest of all deep big brown eyes.
especially when they're looking into mine.
i love you.
................
{9.6lb chase in my belly, delievered 6 hours later}
{my dad is funnier than yours. ok, it's not a competition, but really, he is.}

DAD
i love your rosy cheeks.
and silver hair.
and that you water ski on one ski.
and do more tricks on the wake board than i can.
even though you're not supposed to.
{sandie, i swear he doesn't do anything really naughty.}
i love it when you come stay at our house for ski trips.
the bed in our guest room is called "grandpa's bed." it's been dedicated. for realz.
you make the tastiest bacon brussel sprouts on the face of the planet.
and going out to eat a steak dinner is a let down after having your grilling delicacies on the weber.
you are the cutest grandpa.
i'm so lucky that you are my dad.
i love you.
......
great men are hard to come by,
and i feel honored to have come by these guys.
{man breakfast father's day menu: bacon, salsa eggs, homemade hash browns, strawberries,
apple juice, and freshly picked roses the my bushes out my back kitchen door.}
is this what your father's day morning looked like?
yeah, us too:)
HAPPY HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
to you and your dads:)

yesterday we skied in the clouds.

it's not about how cold it is.
how hard the wind is blowing.
or how much snow the clouds are dumping down.
it's about how you're dressed.
{just like the oscar's?}
this is what my dad and i talked about on the ski lift yesterday.
how you're dressed.
not the oscar's.
we weren't cold.
even though we were covered in fresh flakes and 18*.
face mask=GOLD.
{insert angel choir singing here.}
not an inch of my skin was showing.
it dumped so much snow on us that after one lift ride dad took a picture
of how much snow had built up on my hat during the 5 minutes we had spent on the chairlift.
we stood there in the middle of all of the snow covered trees,
with the quiet of the snow falling,
and it felt like we were the luckiest people alive.
standing there on our skis.
the wind had stopped,
and the snow was just falling down in thick white flakes on every side of us.
like we were standing in our own massive snow globe.
full of flocked trees.
no one there but us in that spot.
no cars or plows buzzing by.
just trees, snowflakes, and skis.
and a big map of all of the deer valley slopes.
AMAZING.
we stopped in the mini-lodge on the top of the mountain for hot drinks.
and then went back out for more.
and after 4 1/2 hours of skiing our legs finally gave out and we called it a day.
and then i was worthless the rest of the night and in bed AND asleep by 10:05pm.
{MONUMENTAL.}
oh what a day with my dad.
:):):)

in honor of the oscar's this evening,
i would like to thank...
linsey for coming to my house at 7am to stay with all three of my kids.
you are the most INCREDIBLE friend a girl could ever have:)
i love you love you love you!
thank you mom for giving me your skis.
thank you dad for buying me a snazzy new pair of red poles and a lift ticket.
thank you sean for taking care of the kids all afternoon after you'd worked all morning.
thank you sandie for sending dad to utah.
{cue signal "wrap it up" music.}
{so that means i get to go on a little more...}
 thank you utah for the greatest snow on earth.

dad's sauce {terriyaki}

the story goes that during my dad's bachelor days he created a sauce.
his famous terriyaki sauce.
for chicken and fish.
or whatever you like.
ketchup, soy sauce, freshly grated ginger, and garlic.
there are no measurements.
just the taste.
i do mine thicker.
his is always better.
but he did teach us how to grill up a slammin' salmon.
so we do.
once a week in the summer.
with veggies and rice.
and our favorite strawberry lemonade.
the ants love us for it.
