the blue beauty {brennan gets a cast}

brennan charmed the ladies of primary children's casting clinic this afternoon.
they were rolling at all of his one liners.
and the redheaded nurse turned to me and goes,
"this kid is really funny isn't he?"
and i was all,
"you have no idea!"
then she explained how to take care of the waterproof cast.
and was so intense about it that it totally freaked me out,
and i wondered if we should have just gotten a regular cast.
{and then the doctor came in and told me it was not that big of a deal.}
the first thing brennan said once his cast was on was,
"it's so heavy."
and then does the test arm lift like there was a thousand pounds hanging off of his bandaged arm.
then he inspected it by moving his blue beauty every which way and direction.
my favorite part was when he had a psychedelic moment with his fingers.
waving them in front of his eyes.
then off to the side,
and finally came to the conclusion that yes,
he can in fact move them all at the same time.
{his fingers.}
maybe you had to be there...
the doctor was taking forever,
and brennan was yawning,
so then i yawned,
so i taught brennan about how yawning is contagious.
and after i explained what contagious meant,
he would yawn over and over again,
and laugh hysterically that when he would yawn,
i would yawn.
and then we decided we should take yawning pictures.
so here is our best yawning picture.
and then the doctor came in and we were yawning at my camera,
and we most definitely looked pretty silly.
when we got home,
max came running up to us with her Ariel doll,
and gave brennan a big hug.
while we were gone,
my mom and max made a matching blue cast for Ariel.
and max was SO excited to show us.
it was so cute,
i nearly died.
{no mermaids were harmed in the making of this photo.}
{no brennan's were harmed in the casting of this arm.}

google it hot shot.

look at her elbow crease,
it's what i'm talking about;-)
the hot shot was wrong.
it wasn't pilomatricoma.
it doesn't need to be removed.
it will go away in 3 to 4 years.
victory never smelled so sweet.
yet when they told me it wasn't pilomatricoma i sat there feeling like i should be defending it.
like, "well, that's what hot shot said, are you sure it isn't? are you sure it's this new thing? are you sure it's going to go away?"
then i realized i was defending hot shot.
and probably insulting their experience, but i'm paying them whether i get my questions answered or not, so i might as well ask them.
so i said to myself, "self, this is your second opinion. listen to it."
ta-da.
big sigh of relief.
no surgery.
no under the knife.
goes away.
why am i defending pilomatricoma hot shot?
b/c it makes me wonder if anyone really knows anything.
it's not painful.
it's not bothering her.
this is good.
now i can go back to feeding my daughter fruits and veggies in the wrong order.
did i mention they gave me a paper with the name and said, "this is so you can google it."
but not in a snotty way.
plus, they introduced themselves (the intern and the doc)
AND
used my name,
AND
used the now 5 1/2 month old's name.
they had me at hello:-)
really though, i think i might just have to have "GOOGLE" tatooed across my forehead.
since it's already there and all.
by the way, her bumps are Juvenile Xanthogranuloma.
go ahead, google it;-)
...
p.s.
my pride almost left this part out.
her bumps have changed color in the last month.
when hot shot saw them they were white.
pilomatricoma white.
they are now yellow.
xanthogranuloma yellow.
still.
i don't like hot shot.

Pilomatricoma.

i spent the better part of my afternoon at the pediatric dermatologist.
waited forever.
enjoyed the elevator music.
we were early, they were running late.
in the patient room we waited some more.
then magna cum laude hot shot walked through the door.
he did NOT shake my hand.
he did NOT introduce himself.
he did NOT ask my name.
he did NOT ask max's name.
she was referred to as "the 4 mo. old."
and his hair was too spikey.
i did NOT like him.
not b/c of the hair.
i started looking for things that irritated me extra after awhile.
max smiled a lot at him.
i tried to give her the **nod wink** to begin some puking and pooping on him, but she continued smiling.
bless her.
so magna cum laude hot shot asks me,
how the bumps began on "the 4 mo. old's arm."
"well, it started as..."
and then he cut me off.
"it's a pilomatricoma, blah, blah, blah...common in children...blah, blah, blah, surgery to remove, blah, blah, blah..." he says.
did i mention i did NOT like him?
can't dr. N do peds too????
what's that?
a benign tumor.
referring to primary children's dermatology,
and
referring me to primary children's plastic surgery.
b/c HE KNOWS i'm THAT KIND OF MOM
who wouldn't be able to handle him doing it in the office.
what does he mean HE KNOWS?
HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW MY NAME.
did i mention i did NOT like him???
he google's it.
yup, looked like it.
can i leave now?
put max in her carseat.
asked for the numbers.
he ends the visit by saying,
"now when you go home and spend hours upon hours googling pilomatricoma b/c YOU'RE THAT KIND OF A MOM, i can tell, call me when you have questions."
uh-huh.
again, HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW MY NAME.
and he said it in a jerky way.
and third of all, this is my SECOND CHILD.
i don't have HOURS UPON HOURS to google anything.
i only have AN HOUR to google it for all of my friends, relatives, and distant cousins.
so there!!!
idiot.
consult with primary children's plastics in two months
then it's under the knife.
with the fancy mucho bucko drugs.
i don't like it.
any of it.
we'll see how the consult goes in aug.
i hope we NEVER have to go back to magna cum laude hot shot ever again.
but if we do i'm bringing someone with me.
so they can see hot shot and then totally justify me.
boo hoo.
i'm being sensitive.
but really, at least call my kid by her name and pretend like she's a real person.
and use my name too.
...
NOW FOR THE UNEMOTIONAL DETAILS:
hot shot can do it, but may not get it all and will leave a big scar.
not worried about the scar.
want them to get it all.
primary's derm can do it, but may not get it all & leave a big scar.
same thing as hot shot.
primary plastics can get it all and leave almost no scar.
i like the "get it all part" best.
the end.
...
brennan is obsessed with bugs.
he points to his wrist and tells me he has a "bug bite" every day.
he did have one.
it went away, but he claims it's still there.
we hunt for bugs, we find bugs, we love bugs.
so, big surprise, BUG'S LIFE is our latest and greatest movie obsession.
he acts out the movie and quotes the lines along with the show.
it's really cute.

poison control

the moment when your stomach goes up through your throat and into you mouth.
when you count out 3 sets of 3 pills and one more set of 2.
the set of 2 that should be 3.
with your toddler on the floor licking his lips and smelling of vanilla.
the same vanilla that your vitamins smell like.
the urgent phone call to your pediatrician.
the wait that seemed to take 20 minutes to talk to a nurse, debating whether or not to hang up and just call 911.
the nurse telling you to call poison control, and then not being able to find the number on the little fridge magnet you swear you had.
all the while hearing the little voice in your head,
"duh em, duh!!! KEEP OUT OF REACH FROM CHILDREN. duh!!!"
little toddler now with hiccups, smiling up and laughing at me with those rosy cheeks and perfectly red lips.
talking to marci from poison control.
never being so happy that my child is 30 pounds at 16 months old!
realizing that he would have had to take 30 pills, not 1 to even need to go to the hospital.
giving out my name, number, and home address to poison control.
wondering if they pass that kind of stuff onto CPS?
meeting ann marie for $2 fish tacos at rubios.
giving myself a sarcastic pat on the back and a "mother of the year award."
scaring sean with a facebook status update.
and you maybe too?
putting brennan down for a nap.
feeling happy at the way our day has turned out.
relieved that i'm back to worrying about how many verbal words my child has vs. what he "should" have.
or something silly like that...
hearing brooke shields talk about her "natural and easy friendship" with michael jackson and wondering if deep down she really thought he was just as crazy as the rest of us thought he was?
and that's when you call me the heartless one.

a bump on the head & a birthday shout out

i have seen enough hospitals this year.
s.d.gib is home recovering from a bump on the head.
a bump on the head that required head, neck, & chest CT scans (all clear, mind you), and 12 hours at the university hospital.
did anyone else know there were CT scans for anything other than the head?
me neither.
there was a fainting episode, but they tell me men don't "faint."
they "pass out."
so he passed out and bonked his noggin' on the floor in the ICU.
he was not in the ICU for himself.
see it was day 2 of his summer internship so he was about to put a brace on a patient.
next thing he knew, KABOOM!
took pork loin to the doc this morning as well.
i'm a regular Florence Nightingale!
antibiotics prescribed.
wheezing, coughing.
felt like the rsv routine.
bronchitis or a form of pneumonia is what dr. jopling said.
two go arounds with "neb" for the albuterol treatment.
double puffs with the spacer 3-4x a day.
asthmatic, but not really, at least not until he's 2.
insurance purposes say so.
but they're treating him for asthma anyway.
just not calling it asthma.
i'd rather him not have asthma, so if it's just some wheezing that needs and inhaler and "neb," but it's not asthma.....
wait, that sounds like asthma.
...
on a lighter note,
the flowers are blooming on the trees in the park.
pretty, fluffy, pink ones.
and MOST importantly,
it's silver fox's birthday today.
dad is top left
so serious, who killed your dog?
happy 62nd p-diddy!
